Interior

Lighting

Typically, lighting for conservatories is kept low key. These are spaces designed for relaxation and entertainment. As such, chandeliers work well, combined with standard lamps, table lamps and wall sconces. Sometimes, high hats are used if the design permits to give an all over background light, and spotlights can be used to highlight plants, artwork or other decorative pieces.

Again, Hampton Conservatories has built up excellent working relationships with interior designers and are happy to advise you on your particular interior design project.

Flooring

The choice of flooring is almost endless and is dependent on the use and location of the space you are designing. Most conservatories and glass buildings will have porcelain, stone or terracotta tile floors. These can be hard wearing, easy to clean, and provide an excellent indoor/outdoor feeling. Some finishes can be used in both the interior and exterior of the space so there is continuity from the one to the other, if required.

We have used polished concrete in greenhouses as well as pebbles, and there are numerous mosaic or encaustic tiles on the market for a busier look. Some floor tiles lend themselves to a geometric pattern (perhaps a diamond pattern set within a border), while others look better set in a random layout.
If you are looking for more of an indoor feeling, you can consider a wood floor, although if there is going to be a lot of foot traffic from the garden into the room, this type of finish may not be as durable as you would like. Also, if your room is exposed to a lot of glare from the sun, a wood floor can discolor in time.

Once you have a design for your room, the decision for flooring is made easier. If the room is open to adjacent rooms, then you may want to continue an existing floor finish into the new space. Sometimes, the existing floor is no longer available, in which case you will probably look for a contrast, but one which possibly picks up on some color or detailing in the existing floor. We will be happy to advise you on some suitable choices.

Fans

Ceiling fans can provide not only a flow of air throughout the conservatory, but can also be an attractive old world feature. Although not a main means of cooling a glass room, they will certainly help to move the air around, and their slow motion can be very relaxing.

Furnishings

Because conservatories are very different to other more conventionally built spaces, clients often wonder how the spaces should be furnished. A lot will depend on how the room is to be used and whether you want an indoor/outdoor feeling or more of a finished room look. Lloyd Loom, willow and rattan furniture lends itself to an indoor/outdoor feeling, while a comfy upholstered couch is ideal for a finished look. In many cases, you can combine both. Wrought iron and wirework furniture are also good choices.

Built-in furniture

Several of the projects Hampton Conservatories has been commissioned to undertake over the years have included custom built-in furniture. This has ranged from fire place surrounds, incorporating TVs, and hi-fi equipment, to display cases, book cases and window seats. Even simple paneling can transform a room.
